Earth Day has been observed on April 22 since 1970. The
fight for a clean environment continues in a vibe of increasing urgency, as the
ravages of climate change manifest every day.
The main cause of damage to our planet is us. Humans take
for granted all that the Earth gives us. It is if we are children taking for
granted the things our parents give us. We fail to realize that the natural
resources/gifts are finite. And although taking care of our planet may seem
like a daunting task, it truly requires very simple changes in our personal
lifestyle.
Here are 5 simple changes that make a huge impact to help
the environment:
- Conserve water - Limit your shower time. Turn off the faucet when you brush your teeth. Fix those leaks. (According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a leaky toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water a day.) Trade in your bottled water for a reusable water bottle and drink filtered water.
- Walk or use a bike - Instead of using your car to run errands, walk or ride a bike. You'll not only reduce greenhouse gases, but you can also improve your health and burn calories.
- Use energy-efficient light bulbs and appliances - Compact fluorescent light bulbs use two-thirds less energy than a traditional light bulb and last 10 times longer. Look for Energy Star appliances, which meet the EPA standards for energy efficiency.
- Carpool - The EPA found that not using your car for just two days a week can reduce gas emissions by an average of 1,590 pounds per year.
- Reduce, reuse, and recycle – Reduce the amount and toxicity of trash you throw away and reuse containers and products. Recycle as much as possible and buy products with recycled content.
These simple lifestyle changes are stupid simple and yet, we
often miss the mark. Happy Earth Day!
