Moving In Together, How Soon is Too Soon?

Spring has sprung and amore is in the air. Perhaps after months of schlepping back and forth to see your beloved in the bitter cold of the polar vortex, you may be thinking that it’s time to co-habitat. But, how soon is too soon to move in together?

Taking a look at 1,000 co-habitating couples, Rent.com set out to find out how important the “try it before you buy it” theory is and how couples truly feel after they’ve been hanging in the same quarters. Honestly, we got freaked out at the sight of our boyfriend’s toothbrush in the bathroom so we were just as interested as the rest to find out what the survey uncovered.

Out of the 1,000 couples surveyed, 27% of respondents said they moved in with their partner after dating for less than six months. Yet, only 7% of renters recommend making that jump so quickly! In fact, 18% didn’t think couples should move in together until after marriage. Hmm … interesting. So perhaps we aren’t such a freak for getting freaked out by the toothbrush????

Here are a few highlights (and WTF) stats from the survey:
  • The #1 thing renters said they wished they discussed before moving in was how to divide their finances! (Um … duh! Seriously? These people didn’t think out this before hand?)
  • Say goodbye to girls’ night out (Not Gonna Happen For Us!) 63% said they rarely, if ever, have a night out with JUST their friends! (Where is that number for co-dependents anonymous?)
On the upside, 32% said the biggest benefit to moving in together was finding out if their significant other was the one -- This is the most humorous stat from the survey. Let’s start with “on the upside”. The upside of what? Hmm … you move in together and one of you determines if you’ve found “the one”. There is no “the one”. However, there is the person who may fit into your life at a particular time. But, if you’re down for buying into the ridiculousness of finding your one true and only love, then by all means move in together … now!

How To Handle Meeting His Parents

With the holidays fast approaching, your beau has asked you to go home to meet his parents. This is a good thing, right? Guys don’t usually take their girlfriends home to mom and dad unless they see the relationship as something substantial. Oh, but your nerves are getting the best of you with the big question … “Will his parents approve of me”? And if you’re not asking yourself this question, you’re probably not that invested in the relationship, which is a whole other topic for another day.

Although there’s never a guarantee that anyone is going to like you, there are a few fairly standard actions that you should follow to ensure that you will, at least, be welcomed back. While you may be envisioning scenes from “Meet The Parents,” meeting his parents is most likely not going to be that awkward and you have control over setting the tone for this first encounter. With a little preparation and the tips below, you should be able to make this first meeting a happy and positive experience for both you and your beau’s parents.

1. Do Your Research

You don’t need to go NSA level, but you do need to know the basic dynamics of his family. Take the time to find out what his family’s cultural norms are. Do they observe a specific religion? Are they ultra-conservative or super laid back? Is there a specific hobby that the family participates in? How should you address his mom and dad? If his family holds culture differences that are vastly different from yours, preparation is essential in order to avoid awkward or offensive situations.

2. Looks Matter

Regardless if his mom and dad are “chill,” rest assured that you’re going to be judged. Meeting his parents is probably not the best time to don a mini-dress and 4-inch stilettos. Error on the side of caution and dress a little more conservatively then you may usually do, and if you’re going to be an overnight guest, bring pajamas and a bathrobe. Speaking from experience, no member of his family wants to see you waltzing from the bathroom in just a towel … except for his pervy little brother maybe.

3. Do Not Arrive Empty Handed

The Dating Examiner often hosts dinner parties and houseguests. From personal experience, TDE can share that a guest who arrives empty handed is a guest that obviously has no manners or appreciation for her hospitality. Whatever you bring absolutely does not have to be expensive or grand, it is the simple thoughtful gesture that’s important. If your beau tells you that you don’t need to bring something, ignore him … he’s wrong and yes, his mother will take note of the empty handed girlfriend.

4. Manners Matter

No matter whom you interact with at your beau’s house, be polite. Politeness includes avoiding topics that may be controversial, such as politics. And manners include getting off your butt after dinner (or any meal) and helping to clean up. Remember that you are a guest and the “Golden Rule” applies, but most of all enjoy the experience … and don’t forget to send a thank you note!

Plenty of Fish dating site removes ‘Intimate Encounters’ option

Online dating site, Plenty of Fish (POF), announced on May 20 that it has decided to remove the “intimate encounters” option from the site. POF founder, Markus Frind, decided to make this somewhat radical move in an effort to take the dating site’s integrity back and place emphasis back on the founder’s original vision … relationships.

The announcement of the option change, along with two others was made to POF customers via the site. Frind stated that, "When I created POF, I wanted it to be all about finding relationships with the right person. I got the site to 10 million users without any employees, people and POF was generating a ton of relationships. But around three years ago, everyone started using the website via mobile phones."

About 70 percent of the sites users log on via a mobile phone and Frind reports that, “unfortunately about 2% of men have started to use POF as more of a hookup site mostly due the casual nature of cell phone use.”

The three major changes to the POF website are:

1. First contact cannot be sexual. “Anyone who tries to get around this rule will be deleted without warning,” says POF.

2. Users can only contact others who are not more than 14 years younger or older than themselves. There is "no reason for a 50 year old man to contact a 18 year old women," according to POF.

3. “Intimate Encounters” have been terminated. According to POF statistics, there are 3.3 million people who use the site every day, and of those there are only 6,000 single women looking for intimate encounters. And of those 6,000 women, many are men. "Intimate Encounters on POF can be summed up as a bunch of horny men talking to a bunch of horny men pretending to be women," Frind stated.

For those seeking to find a serious relationship via online dating, this can only be good news to know that the founder is taking a proactive role.
