Columbia Records Celebrates 125 Years Of Great American Music

Columbia Records will celebrate its 125th anniversary with the release of a book titled 360 Sound: The Columbia Records Story on the great American record label and its role in initiating recorded music, cultivating great artists, and igniting cultural change. Written by Pulitzer Prize-and GRAMMY nominated author and historian Sean Wilentz, the book provides a journey through Columbia Records' storied past and its contributions to entertainment from the invention of commercial recording through the present day.

360 Sound: The Columbia Records Story, published by Chronicle Books, will be released on October 30 th. It begins in the late 1880's, when Columbia, under the leadership of Edward Easton, seized upon the phonographic inventions of Thomas Edison and others to offer the public the first commercial musical recordings. The book goes on the explore the rich stories of how Columbia's artists and producers have redefined American music and performance over the past 125 years, at once reflecting and shaping changes in the wider culture.

Simultaneously, Columbia Records will release a deluxe package, which will include, in addition to a hard cover copy of the Wilentz book, a separate book, written by Dave Marsh, entitled 360 Sound: The Columbia Records Story: Legends and Legacy. Marsh has culled from Columbia's vaults a collection of 263 songs and tracks of the greatest historical, as well as musical, significance, and his book offers his thoughts on each selection. The package also includes a beautifully crafted drive with all 263 recordings.

Columbia's list of major performers, past and present, is unsurpassed and includes much of the most important, and beloved music in all genres, including pop, rock, country, show tunes, classical, jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and blues. Artists recorded by Columbia and its subsidiaries have included Barbra Streisand, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Miles Davis, Leonard Bernstein, Johnny Cash, Beyonce, Adele, Billy Joel, Al Jolson, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, Robert Johnson, Bing Crosby, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Tony Bennett, Simon and Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen, Neil Diamond, Aerosmith, Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson, Yo-Yo Ma, LL Cool J, James Taylor, Philip Glass, Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, Dixie Chicks, John Mayer, Jack White, and more.

360 Sound includes 300 rare and intimate photographs from the Columbia archives and sidebar discussions of crucial developments and performers written by eminent music historians Dave Marsh and Colin Escott. The book offers a virtual history of the music industry from its infancy, tracing Columbia's pivotal technological as well as business innovations, not least its invention of the LP. It also reflects on the connection between Columbia's artists and music and sweeping cultural and political changes, from the emergence of mass commercial culture to the rise of the civil rights movement and beyond.

The release of 360 Sound: The Columbia Records Story will be celebrated with a launch event in New York on Oct. 30 th. Additionally there will be a retrospective exhibit at the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles. An event is set for November 7 th at the Museum on opening day.

360 Sound author Sean Wilentz is one of the nation's most prominent historians. His books and commentary on music, politics, and the arts have received numerous awards, including a Pulitzer Prize nomination, and his writing on music has been nominated for a Grammy Award. He is currently the George Henry Davis 1886 Professor of American History at Princeton University.

Dave Marsh has written more than 20 books on rock and popular music. He has written extensively for publications including Rolling Stone and Playboy. Since 2004, he has hosted a two-hour weekly show on XM/Sirius Radio.

Linge Shoes Announce Ballet Flats as the Next Barefoot Shoe

Linge Shoes has just announced that they are offering ballet flats that are the next barefoot shoe. The fitness community is familiar with running shoes that are created to embody the feel of being barefoot for running and activity. Some of the benefits of a barefoot shoe include a more natural foot position, comfort and a reduced risk of injury. Going barefoot will ultimately wear down and dirty the feet but a minimalist shoe offers the feel of being barefoot, which creates body awareness and a natural tendency to correct an improper gait.

Linge Shoes is introducing an innovative spin on the barefoot shoe by providing their line of ballet flats that are lightweight, pliable and just as comfortable as being barefoot. This will give women the opportunity to wear their barefoot shoes, outside of the fitness club. The ballet flats are versatile and stylish, and can be worn to work or out for a night of dancing. This means that women can still receive the benefit of the barefoot feel, even when they are not exercising. The style has been trending in 2012 and this allows women a fashionable alternative, unlike the functionally designed barefoot shoe of the fitness industry.

Linge Shoes currently has eight different colors of shoes available and the flats retail at $59.00. Linge Shoes can be contacted directly with questions and comments about their line of genuine leather ballet shoes.

The Olympic Creed and Motto

The Creed
"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."

The Olympic Creed - Pierre de Coubertin got the idea for this phrase from a speech given by Bishop Ethelbert Talbot at a service for Olympic champions during the 1908 Olympic Games.

The Olympic Motto
The motto in Latin is "Citius, Altius, Fortius" - which translates in English as "Swifter, Higher, Stronger".

In 1921 Pierre de Coubertin borrowed a Latin phrase from his friend, Father Henri Didon, for the Olympic motto.

The Olympic Oath

The Olympic Oath as instituted in 1920 was "In the name of all competitors, I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules that govern them, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honor of our teams."

In 2000, the oath was updated to included a pledge against the use of drugs at the games. The currently used oath is now "In the name of all the competitors, I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, committing ourselves to a sport without doping and without drugs, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honor of our teams."

The Olympic Hymn (English version)

Immortal spirit of antiquity,
Father of the true, beautiful and good,
Descend, appear, shed over us thy light
Upon this ground and under this sky
Which has first witnessed thy imperishable fame.
Give life and animation to those noble games!
Throw wreaths of fadeless flowers to the victors
In the race and in strife!
Create in our breasts, hearts of steel!
Shine in a roseate hue and form a vast temple
To which all nations throng to adore thee,
Oh immortal spirit of antiquity.

Celebrate the Summer Olympics with an English tea party

Tarts

Ingredients

1/2-cup (1/4 lb.) butter
1/3 cup roasted salted almonds
1/3-cup sugar
1 large egg white
1-teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
3/4-cup all-purpose flour

Preparation

1. In a 1- to 1 1/2-quart pan over medium heat, cook butter until particles on pan bottom and foam that floats on melted butter turn amber-colored and smell toasted (mixture may bubble up), 5 to 6 minutes. Let cool at least 10 minutes.

2. In a food processor or blender, whirl almonds and sugar to a fine powder (if using a blender, transfer to a bowl). Scrape browned butter into container with nuts and sugar; add egg white, vanilla, almond extract, and flour. Whirl or stir with a fork until blended (dough will be sticky).

3. For petite tarts, use 2 1/2-inch round tart pans (about 3/4 in. deep; 2-tablespoon capacity), lining each with about 1 1/2 tablespoons dough.
For cookie-size tarts, use 3-inch round tart pans (about 1 1/4 in. deep; 5-tablespoon capacity), lining each with about 3 tablespoons dough.
With your fingertips, press dough evenly over bottom and up sides of pans (nonstick or regular), flush with rims. Set slightly apart in a shallow, rimmed pan (10 by 15 in.).

4. Bake in a 300° regular or convection oven until tarts are richly browned at the edges and slightly paler in the center, 25 to 35 minutes; small tarts brown faster, so start checking them early. (If you prefer slightly softer tarts, bake only until edges are golden brown, 20 to 30 minutes.) The tarts puff up in the center as they cook, leaving only a small depression.

5. Transfer pans to a rack and let stand until tarts are warm but comfortable to touch, 5 to 8 minutes. Then invert one pan at a time onto a flat surface and gently squeeze, tapping very gently. If tart doesn't fall out, ease free with the tip of a sharp knife. Serve warm or cool.

Served plain, tarts are like cookies; invert them on the plate so the impression of the mold shows. If you serve the pudgy little pastries right side up, spoon a small puff of sweetened whipped cream in the slightly depressed center and top with several fresh berries -strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries - or fresh currants. You can make the dough (steps 1 and 2) up to 3 days ahead; wrap airtight and chill. Bring to room temperature before continuing. You can make the tarts up to 3 days ahead; wrap airtight when cool and let stand at room temperature. Freeze to store longer.

Say Cheese! Calling All Babies and Toddlers for the Gerber Generation Photo Search!

Gerber Announces New Facebook Search to Find Its Next Advertising Star

Gerber Products Company, part of the Nestle family, announced today the launch of the Gerber Generation Photo Search III on its Facebook page. Starting today, parents of children up to 48 months of age are encouraged to upload their favorite photo of their children for a chance to win the search grand prize – a $50,000 cash prize and the opportunity to star in an upcoming advertisement for Gerber. Photo entries are being accepted through Aug. 26.

"The Gerber baby has become an iconic symbol and a reminder of Gerber's commitment to happy, healthy babies. We're excited to bring back the Gerber Generation Photo Search as we know our Facebook fans have been eagerly awaiting the chance to enter their children," said Cathy Abramski, Head of Consumer Communications & Business Planning, Nestle Infant Nutrition. "At Gerber, we're committed to nourishing a healthy generation of babies and toddlers and through Photo Search, we get to see thousands of these smiling faces. Last year's search drew more than 156,000 adorable entries across all the Gerber Generation and we can't wait to see who this year's Grand Prize winner will be!"

This is the third annual Gerber Generation Photo Search. Last year, more than 156,000 entries were received and Tate Rosendahl of Springfield, Mo. was selected as the winner. Tate received a $50,000 cash prize and traveled with his family to New York to shoot his ad.

HOW TO ENTER YOUR CHILD

Parents can visit the Gerber Facebook page and enter their child into the photo search by uploading a picture under the appropriate Start Healthy, Stay Healthy  Milestone during the entry period. At the end of the entry period, a panel of Gerber Generation judges will set out to find photos of children from birth to preschool age that demonstrate visual appeal, expressiveness and consistency with Gerber's heritage and itsStart Healthy, Stay Healthy mission. The child's photo that best meets these criteria will be selected as the Grand Prize winner.

In addition to the Grand Prize winner, six Milestone winners will be selected from each Start Healthy, Stay Healthy ™ Milestone category – Birth+, Supported Sitter, Sitter, Crawler, Toddler and Preschooler. The Milestone winners will each win a $10,000 Gerber Life College Plan ($10,000 value at 10 year maturity. Available for U.S. residents 18-75. Subject to Plan terms and conditions. See official rules for details.). Milestone winners will be determined based on Facebook fan votes. Please visit the Gerber Facebook page for more search details and for tips on how to capture memorable photos of your child from renowned New York photographer Evan Kafka.

Bikini Onesie: Another creeper item for babies

A bikini onesie, designed by bon bebe under their “Wild Child” brand, has justifiably outraged parents. Parents who feel this sort of clothing does nothing more than sexualize children. The piece in question, which was designed for children up to 18 months, features an image of a curvy body sporting a bikini positioned on a white background.

2011 edition of Child Trends' annual Facts

Despite Record Low U.S. Teen Birth Rate, State Teen Birth Rates Vary Widely--Repeat Teen Births Also Vary Across Cities

The 2011 edition of Child Trends' annual Facts at a Glance contains the latest national, state and city-level data on teen birth rates. Although teen birth rates in the United States have declined overall since the early 1990s and are currently at a historic low, teen birth rates vary widely across states, as do the percentages of teen births in large cities.

Nationally, birth rates for all teens decreased in 2009 to 39.1 births per 1,000 young women between the ages of 15 and 19. However, the latest state data on teen birth rates (from 2008) show wide variation:
--Mississippi, New Mexico and Texas have the highest teen birth rates (66 births for every 1,000 female teens ages 15-19; 64 births, 63 births respectively)
--New Hampshire has the lowest teen birth rate (19.8 births for every 1,000 female teens), followed closely by Massachusetts at 20 births per 1,000 female teens and Vermont at 21 births per 1,000 female teens.
The report, which is based primarily on Child Trends' analyses of data from the National Center for Health Statistics, also includes teen birth data for large cities, as well as data on repeat teen births – births that occur to teens who have already had a baby. Nationally, one in five teen births (19%) are repeat teen births. Teen birth data (from 2008) for 72 of the largest cities in the U.S. highlight differences in the percentage of teen births that are repeat births:
--Cincinnati, OH has the highest percentage of teen births that are repeat births (28% of all teen births in the city are repeat births), followed by Jackson, MS (27%), and Dallas, TX (26%).
--Boston, MA and Seattle, WA have the lowest percentage of teen births that are repeat births (12% of all teen births in each city are repeat births), followed by two cities at 13% (Virginia Beach, VA and New York, NY).
Report Includes City Level Data
“We highlight cities with high rates of repeat teen births because having a second teen birth further compounds educational, economic, health, and developmental challenges associated with teen childbearing,“ said co-author, Jennifer Manlove, Senior Research Scientist at Child Trends.
